Enteral means supplying nutrition in a liquid form to those whose nutritional needs cannot be met by normal eating.  If you are able to swallow but unable to consume enough nutrition with regular foods, an oral medical nutritional supplement may be appropriate.  These supplements provide essential nutrients in a liquid drink flavored to enhance its taste.  If it is unsafe or inappropriate for you to consume enough liquids or foods orally, liquid nutrition may be given through a feeding tube into the stomach or small intestine.

The inability to eat normally can occur due to a variety of conditions including a swallowing dysfunction after a stroke or other brain injury, birth defect or cancer of the throat or gastrointestinal system.  The need for specialized liquid nutrition may also result from conditions which affect the absorption of nutrients in the intestine. 

Home Care Medical's enteral nutrition services include a large selection of nutritional formulas and tubefeeding equipment available to meet a variety of needs.  Home Care Medical also carries the supplies and equipment needed to administer your nutritional formula through a feeding tube.  Liquid nutrition may be administered through the feeding tube with gravity using a syringe or feeding bag or at a controlled rate using a portable or stationary feeding pump.
